Common Questions & Answers

Question: Will this tend to stimulate weed growth initially too? Our weeds seem worse. No rototilling was done before seeding with our grass seed.

Answer: No, Scotts Turf Builder wont cause weeds. If you didnt do any rototilling first, that is your problem. I dont have weeds in mine because of rototilling first, and then putting down sod. The grass is really coming on now.
Question: Will it assist new grass seed growth if i mix this turf builder lawn food in with the seed, then spread mixture?

Answer: Till the ground. Spread fertilizer. Rake dirt. Spread seed. Rake dirt again. Water every day until the grass is established.
If spreading dirt: put down fertilizer, spread dirt, spread seed. Rake dirt. Water every day until grass is established.
Question: can i fertilize new sod in hot weather with this?

Answer: Yes, but I water it down good immediately after putting down the fertilizer. It will burn the grass if you dont water it good and immediately. I put mine down about 7:00 p.m. so the water doesnt evaporate so fast.
Question: My husband did not prepare soil correctly when he was patching 2 holes so the grass seed we planted is not doing well. Will this help?

Answer: I recommend using Scotts EZSEED patch and repair Sun and Shade, however for best results a small amount of topsoil will guarantee best results.
Question: Why can’t I have this shipped to Florida if it says it is for use in Florida?

Answer: Its because there are restrictions in florida Durning the rainy season. Different areas have different dates I believe. I learned the hard way after tilling up my yeard. My area is from June 1st to Sept 30th. I hope that means I can order it after midnight.
Question: I do not understand your sizes. what does 14 m mean. is it the square feet that it covers? it would be helpful to know how much each bag weighs too

Answer: This product covers 14,000 SQFT. This a medium size bag and likely weighs 20 to 25 lbs.
Question: What about acidic soil?

Answer: Scotts Turf Builder Starter New Grass Lawn Food can be used on any grass type. This product will not affect the soil PH.
Question: whats the difference between this and the one that says florida

Answer: If you look up “Florida” version, the price is higher for some reason, but more important it says “Not sold in Florida”. If a better definition is needed, Scott has Phone number or website to contact customer service

Helped my lawn get off to a great start

I used this Scotts New Grass Food for the third year in a row now with great results. I live in the high desert in the PNW and my lawn gets matted down from the weight of the snow all winter. It needs a “kick start” every year to bring back to life. When the snow is gone and it has had a little time to air out and dry, I give it a dethatching and the lawn looks pretty beat up after this. Since it is still too cold to seed but I want to take advantage of the spring rains, I give the lawn a healthy dose of this fertilizer to promote growth during this time. The results show within a couple days and you get vibrant, bright green blades of grass poking up and coming back to life. Within a month, my lawn is the first on the block that has fully come back from winter slumber. Between using the thatcher and this fertilizer, the lawn is now strong and healthy and with it being close to the time the irrigation will be turned on, I rent an aerator and use it on my lawn. I apply another liberal application of this fertilizer and the lawn grows like crazy with regular watering. It needs to be mowed twice a week at this point.I let the lawn chill until around June or July. Then I hit it with the Scotts Summerguard for drought and bug control. Its not hard to have a wicked lush lawn by putting in a little time and using the right products at the right time. My lawn is straight up tropical. Dont let me catch you walking on it or letting your dog pee on it.If you found my review helpful, please hit the “yes” button.

My lawn was looking awesome for 6 weeks after I put on the STARTER

My lawn was looking awesome for 6 weeks after I put on the STARTER. It then went to hell after I put on the Turf Builder weed and feed.

It works

I bought this originally from Taylors because we planted St Augustine plugs in our yard (and did not use anything before putting them in the ground) and after a few weeks we started to notice that the plugs were getting brownish and appeared to be dying. They also werent really growing. Since putting this starter down the plugs are no longer brown and the grass appears to be growing!! I will say there are a lot of weeds, so thats annoying but Im not sure if thats normal or not? I wish this stuff would prevent the weeds as the grass is growing but the grass itself appears to be coming in behind them so Im not too worried. This stuff definitely works! I have since applied it to another part of our yard that was dead and am anxious to see that work there as well!

Works very well

My soil is very sandy so the nutrients in it are pretty low. I planted a lawn last fall and it took forever to start growing. The grass was struggling to even grow this spring and was patchy. I added this and bam it filled in super quick and looks amazing. I wish I would have taken before and after photos! This is one of the few lawn fertilizers that have phosphorous in it which help the roots grow. Good stuff!

GROWING GOOD SO FAR

About 6 weeks ago we put grass seed on our back yard, along with the existing grass. Having kept it watered, low foot traffic, mowing as infrequently as possible, and feeding it with this new grass food, all per as instructed, the new grass is growing well. It probably fed the weeds as well, but they can be pulled out and mowed down, and eventually the thicker grass bed will help prevent more weeds from growing. Good product, recommended.

Works great

I laid St Augustine late in September as we are warn and humid in the south nearer to the Gulf. The grass was slow to respond after a month so I tried this Scotts food for grass. It worked great. The blades of grass started to perk up and stand tall. I will put another dose down as it has been 4 weeks since the first application. I have used all of Scotts products for 20 years now with St. Augustine grass in Daytona Beach and now in the Panhandle near Pensacola and with a drop spreader and following the instructions on the bag for dosage you wont be disappointed. Follow directions, dont burn your grass by not watering.

Read directions carefully, follow Scotts suggestions and this will work!

Use exactly as directed – which means read the directions and/or research the product on Scotts website. Highly recommend not spreading by hand unless you want a 2-toned lawn. Less is more with this product and “more” can be too much when spilled! (Lesson learned- not placing the opened bag on the lawn and scooping from it there)Worked exactly as desired and my grass is lush, growing quickly, free of weeds where applied.Wish I would have seeded prior to application, but will remember this factor next season. Can see a huge difference between my neighbors property and mine, which was once all the same.
