Common Questions & Answers

Question: Can I fit a 15″ high bin on each shelf? What is the height of the shelves when they are spaced evenly?

Answer: Adjustable shelves. I know you could get 15″ bins in three spaces, probably 4 if top and bottom shelves are all the way on the top and bottom
Question: I see the framing is made of steel, but what material are the shelves made of? And are they sturdy?

Answer: 3/8″ partial board. Seen sturdy if load distrubuted, but i will not put heavy load in middle of shelf. Could switch to 1/2″ thickness
Question: can I make two 36″ shelves with this one ?

Answer: Kind of. You only have 5 shelves, which would divide as 2 shelves and 3 shelves between the two sets. However, you pretty much need to have a shelf at the top and bottom of each section to hold the thing together properly. Your set with only 2 shelves would pretty much just be a box. I guess you could try skipping the bottom shelf and having just a middle and top; however, it seems like the way its constructed, the result would be pretty unstable.

Question: If you distribute weight can the shelves old 2 – 3 plastic bins apprx 30-40lbs each?

Answer: It says 3,000 lb capacity for the whole unit with 5 shelves. I figure they would then hold at least 600 lb per shelf. So, yes that should be fine. I am quite pleased with mine. It was a bit of a hassle to put together, but not too bad. I actually set 2 units on top of a counter & secured them to the wall, so they g…

It was a bit of a hassle to put together, but not too bad. I actually set 2 units on top of a counter & secured them to the wall, so they go way up there. This is in a storage room where I use a ladder to get to the top. They are quite sturdy. Im very happy with them & now have 3.

Question: Is the middle shelf fixed in place? Other models by this maker have that constraint.

Answer: No, the middle shelf is not fixed in place. All shelves can be positioned wherever needed, providing a lot of flexibility for placement, etc.
Question: how do you level the rack

Answer: It is pretty much self leveling, if you are making sure you put the sides in the same holes all around and they are the same distance in between shelves.
Question: Is the height of the shelf adjustable? For example, can I make the height to 71″,for this is the height of my storage room? Thank you!

Answer: slightly adjustable – you can opt to use only some of the long bars and make it 1/2 height
Question: Where do I get replacement shelves for this rack?

Answer: Most lumber yards will cut 3/4 inch plywood to the size requested. Measure one of the shelves, making sure that the measurement is ACCURATE. Go to the lumber yard with your measurement. You may even find the shelf in the pre-cut area, where it only requires minor trimming.

  1. Konnie

Worked perfectly for my space! Very sturdy! Quick and easy to build with 2 people!

  2. David

Bought this as a tank stand for a 40 gal breeder tank, Set up only half with 3 shelves. Holds the tank study and fits perfectly as if it was made to hold it. Assembly took mere minutes didn’t really need the enclosed instructions as its pretty self explanatory how to assemble it. Very sturdy and well worth the price.

I found putting this shelving unit together easy until adding the top half. At that point it can be very frustrating to get the slotted supports to fit snugly ON TOP of the lower supports. (There is NO overlapping of the suuports.) After viewing a You Tube video on putting this bad boy together, however, I was able to get through that step by adding a cross beam or two to stay the top supports as I added them on. Additionally, I found that sometimes the strong pressed boards do not fit exactly and may suffer a bit in one of the corners when putting them on the steel beams. All in all, I think it will be worth having purchased because of the sturdiness and strength of the product.,.

I like them it was a little harder than I thight to put together but over all great prosuct dor thw price however the UPS driver thought he would be laxy and literally left them on the side walk of my house for who knows how long my husband came home and said he had to move this garbage to pull his car into the drive way turns out it was the racks and the boxes where ripped open and the shelfs scrapped on the grown when UPS sragged them out of their truck im assuming. most of my shelves are broken

  5. AKGW

I’m a mom, and about 120 lbs., and I put this together by myself. USE A RUBBER MALLET TO PUT IT TOGETHER! NOT a hammer; it will bend and damage the pieces. We love it – a whole lot of toy storage!! *We have it anchored to well for safety.

  6. pixeltek

It is a relatively sturdy shelf unit for my garage and I am pleased with that. I like the provided shelf surfaces. However, while I managed to assemble this rack in a reasonable time, I find the design lacking. Rather than four 72″ corner posts, they provide you with eight 36″ corner posts. You are essentially balancing one corner post on top of the other. True, there are fasteners, but I don’t trust them and will add four one-foot corner pieces that will bridge the critical area and provide lasting support by bolting them above and below the joint to fully stabilize the structure.

  7. Gabriella

was easy to put together but it’s really annoying that you HAVE to put the middle shelf where the two halves connect, unlike other racks where they give you a connector thing to hold each side of the pillar together

  8. galetime

I thought this would be easy for one person to put together. But, I quickly found out differently. I got the first set of shelf supports snapped and beaten into place with a rubber mallet. Moved on to the second side and the first ones would pop out of place. Its amazing that what was so had to snap into place popped out so easily. My spouse finally had to help me. You have to move it super carefully to put into place, or it will come apart. My second problem was that I wanted them in the side by side configuration, but there were no instructions, just pictures. I spent a lot of time googling, reading

  9. mylastattempt

These shelves are much too expensive for their value. They are very difficult to assemble because of the flimsy center joint which tends to fail easily. While you are trying to assemble one corner one or two of the other corners fail. one of the poorest shelving units I have ever purchassed and I have at least 30 shelving units in my posession.

  10. gussospina

This product came with a missing part I requested from the factory the replacement as per the instructions “stop do not return to the store call this number” at customer service promised they will overnight the missing part 10 days ago I still do not get it and every time I call I get some different answer I’m very disappointed!!

  11. R. Wallace

These shelves were disappointing. Theyre strong enough for my purpose, but their design makes them almost unusable. You cant easily tell from the product pictures provided, but the top of each particle-board shelf sits well below (about a quarter-inch) the top edge of the rails that hold them. This means that you have to lift the stored item over the edge each time you put it on or take it off – sliding is not possible without dragging the bottom of your stored item over the knife-edge of the rail. Ive added a cut-away photo of a shelf from another Edsal shelf of the same design. If Id seen this first, Id never have ordered these as they are the identical design as the one in the photo.

I generally use these Storage racks in my Basement & Garage to store Tools, Pots/Pan, etc. There are very easy to build and you can split them in half and use them as two shorter racks instead of one tall one. There are surprisingly strong. The only thing that may concern you is that if yo want to put heavier items on the shelf you should really double the actual shelf because they are made out of particle board and not solid wood. That is to be expected given the pricing, but you can store heavier items, just need to reinforce the shelves by doubling up on shelves. Of course would double your cost by having to buy these shelves twice only to use the particle board shelves twice, but still not a bad deal if you really need to have a stronger support and still match the rest of the shelving you may already have installed.

This is a sturdy rack, easy to assemble, for a great price. I wouldnt put a super heavy thing right in the middle of the shelf, but for storage boxes, groceries, tools and such, its perfect. If you think about how it goes together, look at the instructions, it is really easy to assemble with no tools save a mallet or something else to gently bump pieces into place. Once assembled it is straight, even, sturdy. I painted the wood shelves black and it looks really nice.

  14. Tracy

The first time I got Edsel shelves for garage, they came with a piece that joined the two levels together tightly. I loved those shelves, so EZ to assemble for a chick like me. These do not have that piece – you have to really do some serious work to get these together at the middle shelf. That said they are very sturdy and long lasting. Not much will harm these, barring a spill on the unfinished shelf.

  15. FNA

Decent for what I will use it for and the price. Light tools screws etc. Popping in the section where the upright meets is pretty annoying. I bought 2 of these units. The last one I put together just bent like butter after trying to tap it in with a rubber mallet. After about 30 minutes of trying to bend it back to shape and get it in, I ended up using zip ties to secure it and just put light stuff like plastic anchors on that shelf.

  16. Marlin

Fits perfectly for 40G breeder aquariums.

  17. Brian S

These shelves were very easy to put together and are quite sturdy. All of the pieces were easy to identify and put together quickly (in about 15 minutes or so with a rubber hammer). Looks great in the garage and will probably purchase at least one more in the future. I great solution to add a bit more storage anywhere!

  18. Tim K

Excellent value. I have several of these in the garage – various depths and dimensions. They hold a lot of weight and they work extremely well. They are a bit of challenge to assemble the first time but, once you get the hang of it, it gets easier. I have assembled at least 12 of them at this point.
